Welcoming Our New Executive Director

Angela M. Carter,

Angela M. Carter is a professional with extensive experience in human resources and nonprofit leadership. She specializes in marketing, communications, event planning, graphic design, community engagement, and program management. Her diverse background includes skills in human resources management, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, creating and leading volunteer programming, and community outreach.

Angela’s commitment to driving social change is evident through her involvement in advocacy and activism, where she leverages her talents to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and individuals. Angela is a creative individual with a passion for artistic expression, including writing, poetry, novel writing, motivational speaking, spoken word performance, and visual art. She believes artistic expression is powerful for inspiring change and fostering understanding. Her activism work has been recognized through nominations such as the National Pushcart Prize in 2014 and the 2015 Virginia Library Literary Award for poetry, affirming her status as an innovator in both the professional and artistic avenues. Angela has participated in over 300 events as a poet, visual artist, performer, advocate, organizer, and public speaker. Her second book will be published in late 2024.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in Management and Organizational Development from Eastern Mennonite University. Angela holds a certification in nonprofit management from James Madison University, was the recipient of the 2021 Staff Recognition Award (JMU), and recently completed the national PMP (National Project Management) certification course.

Angela has joined The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham with an innovative mindset and genuine care for the organization and its impact on our community and beyond. She aims to build awareness of the organization’s impact and foster new partnerships to expand the reach of their care and services.
