Nourishment for Neighbors

Supporting Food Security Across Harrisonburg and Rockingham

Nourishment for Neighbors is a community-driven food security initiative of The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham. Each September, we bring together generous donors, local partners, and community members to help strengthen food access throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Through this initiative, The Arc collects food donations and distributes them through participating local food pantries and community kitchens. Along with food, we share Food Security Resource Packets that connect neighbors with helpful local services, practical information, and resources for finding support throughout the year.

Nourishment for Neighbors recognizes and uplifts the essential work already being done by food pantries, kitchens, nonprofits, faith communities, and other organizations serving our neighbors.

How It Works

Community members, businesses, and partner organizations donate food to help support local food-access sites.

The Arc works with participating food pantries and community kitchens to distribute those donations where they are needed.

Each distribution also includes Food Security Resource Packets with information about local food programs, community services, and other helpful supports available in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Food Donations

We gratefully accept both nonperishable and perishable food donations.

Nonperishable donations may include shelf-stable foods and other pantry items. A suggested donation list and drop-off instructions will be announced later this month.

Perishable food donations are also welcome. To help ensure food is fresh and safe for distribution, perishable items must be purchased on the day before or the day of their scheduled distribution.

Food Security Resource Packets

Food access is about more than one meal or one distribution. Our Food Security Resource Packets are designed to help neighbors learn about the many local organizations, programs, and services available to them.

Each packet will include information about local food pantries, free meal opportunities, food assistance programs, community resources, and practical tips for finding support.

We are proud to use Nourishment for Neighbors as an opportunity to spotlight the organizations and people across our region who work every day to make sure our neighbors have access to food.
