2025 MLK Ceremony & Food Distribution

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s work, The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham (HR) is hosting a free food distribution for everyone in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham community on Friday, January 31.

Join us between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM at the historic Lucy F. Simms Center for our opening ceremony in the auditorium, where we will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., celebrate the historical significance of the Lucy F. Simms Center, and recognize the impactful volunteer efforts of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the staff of The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham. We are thrilled to welcome Southside Chicago-born CEO, poet, orator, music producer, DJ, and performing artist Ronnie Brandon, also known as iRon Lion, who will deliver Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and provide live music for the ceremony. It’s an honor to have Mr. Brandon join us for this special occasion!

Are you interested in receiving a free food box for you and your family? We’ve got you covered—no qualifications or ID required! This is a convenient drive-through food pick-up, so stop by anytime between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the parking lot of The Lucy F. Guest Bio

Ronnie Brandon, born in 1974 on the Southside of Chicago, began his lifelong journey in public speaking and music at the age of five. As a child, he sang in the choir at New Galilee Baptist Church and performed at renowned gospel concerts featuring legends like Shirley Caesar and The Hawkins Family. His early years were steeped in a rich musical and cultural environment that laid the foundation for his future.

In 1983, Ronnie’s family relocated to Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he became deeply involved in the community. Local educators, church leaders, and mentors played a pivotal role in shaping his character and talents. He often credits figures like his childhood friend Stephen Thomas and NBA legend Ralph Sampson, whose family became close to his, for their influence and support during his formative years.

Ronnie’s passion for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of equality and unity has taken him on meaningful journeys to landmarks such as Dr. King’s home in Atlanta and the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where Dr. King was tragically assassinated. These experiences deepened his commitment to spreading Dr. King’s message of hope and love. “Being able to come home and share [MLK’s “I Have a Dream] is amazing, I feel more qualified! When giving the speech I see and feel mountains being moved, chains of ignorance falling off people’s minds, love weaving through friends.”
